What in the world is grenadine syrup? It is a red syrup made from pomegranate juice and sugar. It is used a lot in cocktails both for its flavor and color. It is a French word that means pomegranate. The French word is grenade. Rose Grenadine is the most popular brand and has a lot of high-fructose corn syrup in it. If you would like to make your own grenadine here is a recipe for it.
Homemade Grenadine Syrup
This should not take to long to make, less than an hour
Ingredients:
2 pounds of pomegranate
2 cups of water
sugar
red food coloring if you want to make it look richer
Separate the seeds from the membranes and skin. In a saucepan simmer the seeds with the water and stir until all the juice is released which will take about 5 minutes. Pour through a cheesecloth into a bowl, pressing the juice from the seeds. Discard the seeds. Measure the strained pomegranate juice and add an equal amount of sugar or less, this is where you can have some control over the amount of sweetener. Pour this mixture back into the saucepan and bring to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Let it cool to room temperature and then add a few drops of food coloring. I went to a hobby store and bought several decorative bottles with stoppers and poured the syrup into them and gave these away as gifts to my drinking friends! :) You can use this syrup also for children's drinks like Shirley temple or Roy Rogers, desserts, and of course cocktails.
