Drum Cake

A long time ago, a yellow cake with chocolate icing was called a chocolate layer cake.

Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease and flour two 8 or 9 inch round layer pans.

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoons salt

Sift together into a mixing bowl.

Add the following:

1/2 cup soft shortening
2/3 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Beat vigorously for several minutes or use an electric mixer at medium speed.

Add the following:

another 1/3 cup of milk and 2 eggs.

Beat several more minutes and then pour into prepared pans.  Bake 30 to 35 minutes.  Cool.

Fluffy White Frosting

4 c. powdered sugar
1 c. shortening
2 egg white
1/2 tsp. salt
4 tbsp. cake flour
4 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix together and beat 10-15 minutes on high speed with electric mixer. Can substitute 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon flour for cake flour.

Decorating:

On sides of cake press striped peppermint candy sticks at angles into icing all around cake.  Set a maraschino cherry at ends of each stick.  If you like, cross two candy sticks on top of cake for drumsticks.
